New resort being built on Washington’s Coast in Westport, new development will be called the Links at Half Moon Bay Golf development is alive and well on the Washington Coast – with the opening of the Links at Half Moon Bay in Westport scheduled for the 2009 golf season.

Chuck Maples thought he was going to have it easy when he had the idea for a golf course and development in 1999. Legal and engineering advisors estimated it would take a few months and a few hundred thousand dollars to entitle the project. Although it didn’t quite turn out that way, the project is finally entitled - and under construction - nine years and several million dollars later.

Along the way, he participated in the renaissance that has been ongoing in Westport, including developing the 192-unit Westport by the Sea luxury condominium complex and opening the Half Moon Bay Bar and Grill on the Westport Marina. And he’s gotten plenty of help, including from daughter Brook Priest, and son Donovan Maples, who manage various aspects of the Westport businesses.

The golf course will be special. Designed by Rick Robbins, the Links at Half Moon Bay will stretch to 7,000 yards and feature Pacific Ocean views from several holes. In fact, the view from the fifth tee box will feature not only the ocean, but Grays Harbor, the Grays Harbor Lighthouse and the Olympic Mountains as well. The golf course is expected to be the cornerstone of a development in Westport that will also feature a convention center, hotel and condo units.

The opening of a golf course on the Washington Coast is good news for traveling golfers,” he added. “There are not many choices on the Washington Coast for golfers to choose from.

“We want to give people another reason to travel to Westport.

“We believe it will complement the fishing and beach industries well. The recent opening of the Westport Winery and other local businesses adds to the beach resort feel, and golf is an important part of that.”
